Unfortunately, our country is prone to earthquakes, and Google’s earthquake alert system on Android phones often saves lives. Now, this earthquake early warning system is expanding to smartwatches. All Wear OS smartwatches will receive earthquake warning notifications with the new update.

Android phones utilize their built-in sensors to communicate with other Android devices, and when they detect an earthquake, they can send alerts before the shaking begins. This system primarily detects the initial signals known as “P Waves,” notifying users a few seconds before the more destructive “S Waves” arrive. While it may not always function perfectly, those few seconds can be life-saving.

You can now see earthquake alerts on your wrist

Until now, these alerts were only sent to phones, but some people might not have their phones nearby. That’s why Google is bringing earthquake alerts to smartwatches. If your watch is on your wrist, you will receive the earthquake alert directly there.

This feature is currently in testing, and as is often the case, it may take some time for the update to reach all users. Moreover, at this point, it only includes the notification feature, meaning smartwatches won’t be able to detect earthquakes on their own, but this may be possible in the future.
