Last month, during an event, Google announced the adoption of a brand new design language under the name Material 3 Expressive for Android and its applications. Although this design will begin rolling out with Android 16, the company has already started making changes to some applications. One of them is Gmail.

Selected users have already started to see the Material 3 Expressive design in their Gmail application. The new design language introduces more vibrant colors, smoother animations, and layered interface elements, which are also evident in the updated Gmail application.

Here’s what the new Gmail design will look like

New screenshots have emerged from users experiencing the updated design language in Gmail. While the changes are not overwhelmingly significant, they are noticeable. The email list now features a rounded card-like appearance, giving the inbox a more modern feel.

Furthermore, we see updates in other sections of the app. The search bar, navigation menu, and account switching area now have a distinct and more colorful layer. New animations accompany the transitions between emails, and the email compose button has a more compared to its previous version.

Currently, the new design of Gmail is only visible to a limited number of users. Therefore, it’s normal if you do not see it yet. Google plans to roll it out to everyone in the future. We will also see significant changes in other Google applications under the Material 3 Expressive design language.
