Complete shutdown in May

The latest preview version released by Microsoft for Skype included a notification indicating that the application will be discontinued in May. Users have been advised to continue their calls and chats via Teams. It has also been noted that many users have already transitioned to the free version of Teams.

Skype was launched in 2003 and was acquired by Microsoft in 2011. Over the years, the application has been developed through various updates and replaced Windows Live Messenger. However, Microsoft’s attempts to integrate Skype into Windows 10 were unsuccessful, which was one of the main reasons for its decline. The company initially transitioned to the UWP (Universal Windows Platform) version but later reverted to the Win32 version.

In 2017, Microsoft developed Teams using the Skype infrastructure and discontinued the Skype for Business service for corporate users. The launch of Windows 11 marked a significant shift towards Teams, indicating the eventual end of Skype. With this decision made by Microsoft, users will be required to
continue their calls and chats through Teams.
