Meta’s new content verification method is underway

Meta Community Notes feature is coming

Meta announced in January that it would transition from its current verification system to the Community Notes system. The testing phase, which began on March 18, is being conducted in the US on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. However, during this phase, the notes added by users will not be visible to everyone initially. The company will test how the system works by assessing the writing and evaluation of notes at the outset.

Users wishing to contribute to Community Notes must meet certain criteria. They must be over the age of 18, have an active account for at least six months, and have verified their phone number. Meta will randomly select participants for the program and plans to gradually expand the process.

Community Notes will be limited to a maximum of 500 characters and must contain a source link. Initially, the authorship of the notes will not be visible. Meta expects users from different perspectives to reach a consensus during the evaluation process. To publish a note, a common judgment must be made by users from a diverse range of opinions that the content is beneficial.

After completing the testing phase, Meta intends to launch Community Notes in English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, French, and Portuguese. The company stated that it will continue to operate the current third-party verification system outside the US, but aims to expand Community Notes globally in the future.
