Apple Podcasts has chosen the limited series titled Hysterical as the program of the year for 2024. This seven-part series, produced by Wondery, investigates a mysterious illness that spreads among a group of high school girls in upstate New York.

When Hysterical debuted in July, it launched as the #1 program on Apple Podcasts and secured a spot among the top 9 programs of the year by the end of the year.

Dan Taberski, the creator of the series, was inspired to explore this story after hearing news of the “Havana Syndrome” that affected diplomats and CIA agents around the world. Taberski recalled another mysterious illness that affected a group of high school girls in Le Roy, New York, and was influenced by the potential connections between these two events.

Apple conducted an in-depth interview with Taberski discussing the origins and production process of the series. In this interview, topics included advice for those aiming to create limited series, how to distinguish between multi-part stories and single-part stories, and planning for serialized storytelling.
