After a decade of auto-generated suggestions, it finally introduces the genre selection feature. Whether you want to listen to pop or R&B, you can directly specify your preferences to Spotify.

Spotify is personalizing the Discover Weekly list, which is released every Monday. With the addition of genre buttons like pop, R&B, and funk at the top of the list, users can easily choose the type of music they’d like to hear. The playlist has also been refreshed not only in content but also with new cover art.

User Complaints Prompted Algorithm Changes

According to data shared by the company, the Discover Weekly playlist has been played over 100 billion times to date. However, recently some users have complained about being repeatedly recommended the same songs and inaccuracies in genre classifications. In response to this feedback, Spotify recently updated the algorithm and genre classification system in May.

In recent years, Spotify has taken several steps towards offering personalized content. Innovations such as an AI-powered DJ, a text-based playlist creation tool, and a fake podcast server centered on personal listening habits are among these initiatives. The new control options added to Discover Weekly are part of this personalization process.
